New collection at PaperSquare Arts!

I have been absent from my blog for a few days now, keeping busy and working on a new collection. I am currently experimenting with a type of paper art called quilling.

quill·ing/ˈkwiliNG/Noun
1. A type of ornamental handicraft involving the shaping of paper, fabric, or glass into delicate pleats or folds.

It is very intricate and very beautiful. I will be updating my new line slowly over the coming weeks. Here is the first preview.

WIM – What Inspired Me – Mini flower explosion while husband was gone.

The hubby was out of town for work this weekend, so I had 2 days by myself to be bored and miss him. I chose to sit down and work on 1 piece that would take a long long time and would keep my mind occupied. Something I had not done before, of my own creation. I wanted it to be complicated as well as detailed.

So I came up with this design. It is a variation of a traditional kusudama flower. I created the design a little bit ago while messing around with paper. This design takes a little longer to put together but I like the end result.

So I spent about an hour picking the colors… then about another hour deciding what size I wanted the flowers to be. I started with 1 giant flower, and then somehow ended up with 21 ity bity flowers (from my usual).. Overall it took about 7 hours to make all the flowers, the vase (which by the way is also an origami vase), the flower arranging etc etc etc.

Boring? No. Challenging? a little…

Should my husband go out of town again so I can bury myself in origami? Not if I want to keep my sanity!

Did I mention I forgot to eat while he was gone and also forgot to feed the pets and water the plants? I am not very functional without him. But after all, he is always my inspiration.

WIM- What inspired me- Kusudama Revenge

I’ve always had this idea in the back of my head, to make a kusudama ball trio and hang them all together. We’ll I did it once, a while back, and my cats (kitties then) decided one night to play soccer with them and then got hungry and chewed on them. I spend nearly 8 hours making them, and when I saw them ruined I was so mad that I stopped making kusudama art for a while. Anyhow, I always wanted to redeem myself and this time keep my work away from my critters, so here it is. Tripledama v 2.0

My skill has gotten better, my folds are smoother, the flowers are more symmetrical and my corners don’t bend anymore. After making so many of these I feel that every time I make a new one it is better than the last one. I guess in this case practice makes perfect. I still spend a lot of time on them, but now its more of a creative process, I have also created my own designs with different petals and different folds, and that just makes me happy.

I burnt the cupcakes!

In a failed attempt to make lemon poppy seed cupcakes, I have redeemed myself by making this lemony yellow flower bouquet. Inspired by the upcoming summer and ready to rock and roll, I am preparing myself to put away the winter coats and open the windows!

I love to surround myself by things that keep my positive and upbeat, so here it is, attempt number 2 at lemons! (this time not edible)

You can purchase them on my Etsy Shop

WIM – What Inspired Me

The idea behind WIM is a weekly post based on my favorite creations and why I made them.

When working with art, I always found red to be a little intimidating, mainly because red is difficult to photograph and hard to manage in almost any medium. In my paintings, red was always a color I had trouble with, it either looked too pink or ugly red… With paper, I have always had a difficult time finding the perfect shade of red, one that isn’t generic or makes me hungry (yes red triggers hunger, google it). One day while shopping for supplies I came across a book with 2 red patterns that I fell in love with and since then I have kept them and feared to make anything out of them because I would no longer have them! Ironic, that red always finds a way to not be my friend.

So finally, I gave in, and I have created this small floral piece inspired by this wonderful yet complicated color. Viva el Red!
